Mr. Cab Driver

My mom and I took a cab back home from Bugis Junction to CCK after what u could call a very productive shopping sprint. We went at it for less than 2 hrs but came out of the mall looking like true shopping queens, armed with countless shopping bags. In our defence, i'm gonna say we were mostly doing some last min xmas shopping. =p

The highlight however was our very animated and gregarious taxi driver, who in the span of the 30 min journey provided us countless laughter and divulged so much personal info abt himself i swear i could script a short story abt his life and job and produced a film out of it.

It didn't help that my mom was being sooo sociable the cab driver cheekily ask her why she was so 'overly friendly', esp when she had a daughter beside her... :D

But i was amazed by the man. He took a look at us, decided we were pretty good with english, and requested my mom to delete missed call records from his handphone as well as some smses. Apparently he was being hounded by a filippina woman he serviced the other day, who was calling him repeatedly insisting he come pick her up from Lucky Plaza... And she has been disturbing him for days already...She got his number by telling him she wanted to book his taxi in future, while he got more than he bargained for. :D

Our cab driver became pretty agitated telling his side of the story, and started recounting several different encounters with young single beautiful looking foriegners (china girls etc.) who attempted to flirt with him during the journey in his cab(read short skirts and insisting on sitting the front seat), trying to solicit favours and persuading him into taking them to cheap rented hotels for discounted rates..

All this when he was married with 3 children~ He was, fair enough, shocked by their audacity, angered by their utter disrespect. He claimed he was out to make a honest living and was a thoroughly decent man, loved his wife & family, and was aghast by such bold advances. So yea half-way i was thinking to myself: 'wow good men still do exist!'

Apparently, it is quite common in the taxi trade for indecent 'exchanges' to be made, and many drivers would take advantage of it.

I got out of the cab feeling pretty impressed by the driver's great camaraderie, sense of humour, tongue in cheek honesty, and his zeal to work hard and lead a decent good Christian life. And if u're thinking he's probably a cheekopek trying to boast and humour us, i can rest assured he wasn't from the way he endeared himself to us. He was, despite his bad smatterings of english and typically 'uncle' nature, was a downright respectable man.

And cab drivers really know a whole lot of dirt under-goings. Indeed i guess most cab drivers are voices of the heartlanders, they really know Singaporeans best. And most of them make for pretty good gossip conversations...

Though i guess no one can beat the amount of information as dished out by the Mr. Cab driver I encountered this afternoon. =)

That one wins hands down =D

god bless
